“The mind is its own place and in itself can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.”
(John Milton, Paradise Lost)
Over fifty years ago I read Paradise Lost and I have never forgotten his quote. Throughout my life it has come back to me, proving itself over and over again.
These things I know to be true; I did not know them to be true and so I suffered; now I know them to be true and the way is made clear:
1. The thoughts I harboured yesterday have created the life I am living today.
2. The thoughts I harbour today are already creating the life I will be living tomorrow.
3. In any given moment I can change the circumstances of my life by changing my thoughts.
As Steven Covey says: “Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.”
All I have to do is decide what I am choosing to think in any given moment. I am a co- creator, what am I choosing to create?
God the creator, lives and breathes and has his being through me.
By the practice of mindfulness I gain mastery of my thoughts, which is the Royal Road to freedom and enlightenment.
